Broadway by the Boardwalk: Max von Essen + Billy Stritch

Monday, July 13, 2026
5:45 PM
Clinton Cove, Hudson River Park
Around West 55th Street and the waterfront

When Broadway goes dark on Mondays, the waterfront lights up.

Hudson River Park's free Broadway by the Boardwalk series brings theater's best to Clinton Cove, and on July 13 the headliner is Max von Essen, a Tony, Drama Desk, and Grammy-nominated performer who recently wrapped a nearly two-year run as Billy Flynn in the record-breaking revival of Chicago.

He's joined by acclaimed singer-pianist Billy Stritch, a fixture of the New York jazz and cabaret scene who spent 25 years as Liza Minnelli's accompanist and toured as Tony Bennett's musical director.

The night opens with Stepping into the Spotlight, a new showcase featuring Broadway understudies who are usually waiting in the wings. This date's opener is Tristen Buttell, a Queens native currently appearing in Just In Time. It's a chance to catch tomorrow's Broadway stars before everyone else does.

This is a free, low-key Field Trip community meetup, not a ticketed event. We'll claim a patch of the Clinton Cove lawn and gather as a group, so you can show up solo and immediately have people to sit with. Bring a blanket, bring some snacks or a drink, and come enjoy a night of Broadway music with the Hudson and the sunset behind it.

Just RSVP, find our spot, and say hi.

What to expect

Where do we sit?

It's open lawn seating at Clinton Cove, so bring your own blanket (and a snack or drink if you'd like). The Field Trip group will gather in one spot so you can find us easily. (Details on how to find each other to come!)

Do people usually come alone?

Yes. Most attendees come solo, looking to meet other people who love theater around NYC.

How long does the event last?

Music starts at 6:30 PM. We'd suggest arriving 30 minutes early to settle in, find our lawn space, and meet the group before the performance begins.

Why this show?

It's free, it's outdoors on the water at sunset, and the talent is top-tier Broadway. A perfect easy night to meet other Field Trippers with zero pressure.

Anything to bring?

A blanket to sit on, plus any food, snacks, or drinks you want. The show itself is free.
